Inventure Academy RS Youth Parliament: 15 to 19 August 2018

Why the Inventure Academy RS Youth Parliament?

In keeping with Inventure Academy’s philosophy for every student to be ‘socially responsible’ (part of our Core Purpose) and ‘be prepared for life’ (part of our Vision), and the Round Square IDEALS (Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership, Service),  the Inventure Academy RS Youth Parliament 2018 is a platform for the youth of the world to begin their Changemaking journey. This Parliament will be attended by high school students from Round Square schools across South Asia & the Gulf region.

Why should you attend the Inventure Academy RS Youth Parliament?

The objective of our Youth Parliament is to equip children with the Right to Participate (guaranteed by Article 12 of the UNCRC) in the world that they are inheriting  & to enable them to be positive change makers. We will achieve this by:

  1. Facilitating the development of   Design Thinking, Data Analysis, Problem Solving & Communication skills.
  2. Exposing students to the process of how laws are created & implemented through the interplay between various stakeholders including international organisations such as the UN, National Parliament, Media,  & Civil Society.
  3. Demonstrating how citizens (including children) can have an impact & be a part of the solution.

What is the focus of the Inventure Academy RS Youth Parliament?

The focus of this Parliament is  – Our children contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4)  of “Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all” by 2030. Our specific sub areas of focus will include the quality of education &  funding, child & cyber safety,  and impact of conflict on the healthy development of youth.

Demonstration of the success of this method

In 2014, Inventure Academy partnered with 18 other schools, the  UNICEF & various legal, market research, and child protection organisations, to create & present a Student Charter to the Govt of Karnataka. This contributed to the drafting of the Karnataka  Child Safety & Protection law which was implemented in Jan 2018.

In the same way that children’s voices have contributed to law-making in Karnataka, we envision the outcomes of the Inventure Academy RS Youth Parliament to include presentation of  Student Resolutions & Charters to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) committee that looks at child participation reports and to Governments of countries that the student delegates come from.

Themes for the Inventure Academy RS Youth Parliament

At Inventure, we strive to take a stand on issues that our community feels strongly about. We ask critical questions, create awareness and work on finding solutions to wicked problems like the purpose of education, child safety, water pollution and traffic. We have seen positive responses to our efforts, and feel we can do even better by understanding what our youth and future feel passionately about, giving voice to their concerns, and working on solutions to these problems.

With this in mind, last year we conducted a survey to better understand what the youth of today consider matters of national relevance. The themes for the Inventure Academy RS Youth Parliament were drawn from the results of the survey which highlighted child safety and the right to quality education as issues our youth are strongly concerned about.
